Sexual Expression & Community at Twin Ponds Lodge: Finding the Balance

It’s no secret—Twin Ponds Lodge is proudly sex positive. We believe that everyone deserves a space to express themselves, including their sexuality, without shame or judgment. But above all, TPL is a community built for and by gay men—a rare and much-needed resource in central Maine, and a lifeline for folks who travel from farther north just to find connection.
But what does it actually mean to be “sex positive”? For us, it’s about honoring the freedom to explore your own sexuality—whether that’s enthusiastically sexual, asexual, or anywhere in between. Being sex positive means embracing a culture of respect, consent, and non-judgment, where no one is shamed for their desires or lack thereof, and everyone’s boundaries are honored. The more official definition? Sex positivity is an attitude that recognizes all consensual sexual activities as fundamentally healthy and normal, and affirms each person’s right to choose what’s right for them—without interference or stigma from others.
While many of our members enjoy the freedom to explore their sexuality here, others come for community—sometimes in spite of the sexual energy, not because of it. For some, just stepping into a clothing-optional environment is a huge leap outside their comfort zone, taken in hopes of finding camaraderie, acceptance, and a sense of belonging.
That’s why we draw a clear line: sexual activity belongs in our dedicated private spaces, not in the common areas of the lodge. We’ve created plenty of private spaces for those connections to happen—use them! When sexual activity spills into the open, it risks making some members feel unwelcome or uncomfortable, and that’s the opposite of what we want for our community.
Of course, we know that different weekends bring different vibes. On Kink & Fetish event weekends, for example, we expect the rules to be a little looser—everyone attending knows what they’re signing up for and consents to a more sexually charged atmosphere. And for our upcoming Solosexual Weekend (first weekend in September), the focus is on solo play, and we’ll relax our usual restrictions in common areas, since everyone attending is on board with that theme.
Still, even during these special weekends, there are limits: full-on sex is never allowed in public lodge spaces, and absolutely never in the sauna, hot tub, or pool—both out of respect for all members and for hygiene reasons.
At the end of the day, it’s about respect—for yourself, for others, and for the community we’re all here to build. If you’re ever unsure or have questions, talk to a staff member. We’re here to help everyone feel safe, included, and able to enjoy TPL in the way that’s right for them.
